The Micklethwait family of Ingbirchworth, Yorkshire, England

Notes

Thomas Brooks-149

A Pedigree put together in the 1890's states that Thomas is from Scawsby, and that Thomas' mother was a daughter of Bartholomew Geldart who was the sheriff of York 1599-1600. The author of this pedigree suggests a possible descendancy of Thomas from Arthur Brooke Chr 14 Jun 1579 at All Saint's Pavement, York, son of Robert Brooke, Merchant. This Arthur was the Chamberlain for York in 1605 (Or was it his father Robert??) This Arthur had an older Brother Stephen who died an infant in 1576. Perhaps that is how the name stephen runs in the family?? Need more proof.

Roger Geldart-144

He was a tanner by trade, and pbtained the freedom of the City of York by his being the son of a Freeman (IE by Patrimony) in 1615. Generally you had to be 21 years old or more to have the Freedom granted to you.
!He was of the Parish of Holy Trinity Micklegate, York, and lived without the Bar of Micklegate.
!His will was dated 17 Jul 1638, and proven Nov 1638.

John Geldart-50

His will was proven 21 feb 1694/5, though I do not have a death date for him. He was married to Hannah, to whom Administration of his will was granted. I do not know if there were any children.
He was described in his father's will as son and heir (in 1648), which makes me wonder if he was the first child, as they are usually classed as the son and heir, unless they die before other children. He was noted to be a brewer in 1676, though I do not know where abouts.

there is a note attached to a large pedigree from which this family structure was discovered which says:
15 feb 23rd year of the Riegn of Charles 1st (1647/8). Mary Geldart, of York, widow, John Geldart, edler, Alderman, of York, John Geldart Jnr, of same city, Son and Heir of Roger Geldart deceased. convey to Stephen Watson, Alderman and Joseph Micklethwaite, Esq, of York or their heirs and assigns, forever, a close of meadow at Acomb, heretofore in the several tenures of Richard Geldart, Rober Geldart and Robert Stadlocke, or some of them and now in the occupation of Robert Burders (?) or of his assigns....etc...etc

Faith Owram-76

I have two large pedigrees of the Geldart family and which were compiled in the late 1800's. There is conflicting evidence as to the parentage of Faith Brooks. I do not doubt that her father is Thomas Brooks, but it is the name of the mother that bothers me.
One researcher has put her down as Miss Geldart, but no first name. Another has given her the name of Faith Owram. Seeing as Faith seems to be a common name in the family, it would seem that possibly her first name is Faith, but to make things more awkward it appears that Thomas brooks was married twice. Once to Miss Geldart, to whom he had Faith Brooks, and again to ..........the mother of Arthur Brooks.

Samuel Geldart-155

His will was dated 18 Feb 1729/30 and was proven 29 June 1730.. Administration was granted to his wife and widow Faith Geldart.

Faith Brooks-154

The fact of Faith being the name of Samuel's wife is born out by evidence found in the Land Deed Registries of the City of York Council. Entry dated 12 Oct 1750, in Volume E96 (or E93) page 244. This can be found at the York City Archives, Exhibition Square, York.
In Skaife's pedigree of the Geldart family is found the following:

Faith, daughter of Thomas Brooks of scawsby, by ........daughter of Bartholomew Geldart, Cook, (Sheriff 1699-1700). died intestate in the parish of St Michael Ousebridge. Administration of her estate was granted to Arthur Brooke her brother and Matthew Owram, Gent, her cousin.
Mention is also made of Mary Baxter, Widow, Faith, wife of John Benson, Gent, Ann Geldart and Hannah Geldart spinsters, her daughters having removed from York

Mary Geldart-153

She was a widow in 1749 She married a Mr Baxter, and was living in Little Powton, Lincolnshire 12 Oct 1750. Her husband had died before 12 Oct 1750.

Ann Geldart-152

She was unmarried in 1749, and was living in Little Powton, Licolnshire 12 Oct 1750, presumably wiht her Sister Mary Geldart Baxter.

Hannah Geldart-151

She was unmarried in 1749, but I am not sure if she was living with her two sisters Mary and Ann.

John Benson-157

I cannot find a John Benson son of George Benson on the IGI.

He was an Attorney of York in 1747, and referred to as ' Mr John' in the parish of Christ Church (Holy Trinity Kings Court, York). He was considered as being 'of York' in 1748.
