Thomas Owston-7661

APPENDIX 2 - OWSTON'S OF THORPE BASSETT AND RILLINGTON
THOMAS OWSTON 1627-1681
There is clear proof in Parish Registers that Thomas was the son of Peter Owston of Sherburn and had married Elizabeth Ruddock 1637-1693 daughter of William Ruddock of Langton at Thorpe Bassett and Langton in 1656/7. Just that piece of information is in both registers. They had a large family who were quite young when Thomas died. Thomas Owston senior died not long after he made his Will on the 28 May 1681. William Ruddock was a yeoman of Langton and had married Jane Lawne in 1636. It is very interesting how his children seem to have gone off and resettled in groups. Between the three researchers we have agreed on these results.
ISSUE:
1. Mary 1657-7. 2. Martha 1659-66. 3. Peter Owston the Yeoman of Thorpe Bassett 1661-1699. 4. Jane 1663/4- Married at Sherburn in 1684 Josias Fox of Sherburn and Rillington and had issue: Through the families of Fox, Harrington, Bulmer, Reed, Dunwell, Jackson and Stockill she is possible an ancestor of Agnes May Stockill 1925-1997 who married Charles Owston of Rillington 1917-1992. More information needs to be found about the Fox family and confirmation that I have found the correct Jane Owston. 5. Elizabeth 1665/6- Married at Thorpe Bassett 1687 to Thomas Vasey of Allerston and had issue. 6. William Owston 1668/9-1730/1 of Kirby Misperton and Seamer married 1698 to Elizabeth Moon and had issue who are still being traced. 7. George Owston 1670- of Allerston in 1716/7. He married and had issue, wife not known or other information. We only know that he had one daughter baptised at Allerston. 8. John Owston 1672-1720 of Brompton by Sawdon. Married and had issue who used the spelling Ouston. Roger Ouston <mailto:rogouston@aol.com> is a descendant of his and is also researching the family. 9. Thomas Owston 1675-1725/6 followed his brother to Kirby Misperton, as a carpenter and founded a family at Little Barugh (pronounced Barr). He married in 1705 Susan Holme and had issue. He founded a farming family who prospered in that area. They too used the spelling Ouston. 10. Joan (Johney in fathers Will) 1678- followed brothers to Kirby Misperton and was married in 1701 to Thomas Otterburn and had issue.

!John (and his family?) were living in Woodhouse Lane, Leeds at the time of his daughter Sarah's wedding (1855).

Peter Owston-9639

PETER OWSTON 1597/1669
Peter the Yeoman of West Heslerton and Sherburn married Martha Fiddis (1604-1665) of West Heslerton the daughter of George Fiddis (1576-1652) and Alice (?) Fiddis at St Leonard`s Malton in 1625.
George Fiddis was the son of Robert Fiddis and Elizabeth Watson (married at Wintringham in 1576 and both buried at West Heslerton in 1602) but I know very little else about the Fiddis family.
There were numerous descendants of the eldest son Thomas 1627-1681 who married and had a large family at Thorpe Bassett. One son founded a branch of the family at Kirby Misperton and an other son the Seamer and Cayton families. Descendants of the eldest son eventually lived in Lincolnshire and flourished there. There are several cases of intermarriage in the descendants of Thomas and a Cambridge educated Vicar!. These details will be expanded on in a further see section two on Thorpe Bassett and Rillington. During the Commonwealth Period in the 1650`s I believe that Peter received the income from the Sherburn Church tithes. This could point to Peter being a Parliamentary supporter. He left a full Will, made on the 22 August 1669 and this was proved on the 16 December 1669, Volume 50, fol 441. The original survives.

Thomas Bulmer-7643

Quarter Session court records for Michaelmas (Sep 29) session of 1716, Thomas Bulmer, Thomas Simpkin and John Quarton, all of Thorpe Bassett and yeomen, are charged in the file of recognizances in the court. The recognizances are required because Thomas Bulmer is charged with bastardy on Jane Uppeby of Burlington. Thomas Simpkin was churchwarden of Thorpe Bassett parish during 1717.
Note: Burlington is also known as Bridlington, a village on the seacoast about 20 miles east of Thorpe Bassett. Both places are in EAST RIDING, Yorkshire along with Filey, Seamer, Sherburn, Wintringham, Settrington and Kirby Grindalythe. (1974).

LAND RECORDS: REGISTRY OF DEEDS FOR EAST RIDING: There are several entries that name Thomas Bulmer of Thorpe Bassett as a party to land transactions between 1719 and 1728.
One of these transcriptions is an indenture of release on 23 Feb 1719 between Thomas Bulmer & Thomas Simpkin, both yeomen of Thorpe Bassett: "all that one cottage house of tenement with a Garth to the same belonging and also six acres of arable meadow or pasture ground be the same more or less abutting on the lands of the Lord Carlisle on the north and west and abutting on the Highway leading to Settrinton on the south and east and which said parcels of gtound was allotted unto the said Thomas Bulmer by the late Inclusure at Thorp Bassett aforesaidf and now in the tenure or occupation of him the said Thomas Bulmer..."
Thomas Bulmer makes his mark on the indenture and it is witnessed by Charles Cartwright of New Malton in Yorkshire, a gentleman and William Martin of New Malton, a gentleman.

Ann ? (Bulmer)-7646

After Thomas' death, Ann married again, 31 Jan 1731 Thomas Coultas, weaver of Wintringham.(Ref TJ Owston 1992). According to Parish Reg of Thorpe Bassett (East Riding), Yorkshire: Ann & Thomas Coultas were married by banns on 13 Jan 1731/32 at Thorpe Bassett.
