She was brought up in Appleton Roebuck, which is not far away from Bilton in Ainsty.
The family tradition is that she had 20 children!

She was born the daughter of Johnathon Smith, a farmer, who was deceased at the time of her marriage to Walter. They were both widows at the time. She is said to be 45 at the time (born 1871) when they married which was 18 Oct 1916 at St Thomas's, York. Her Father was deceased at the time, and used to be a farmer. She lived at 62, Penley's Grove St, York.
Walter was also a Widower, he was 49 at the time of their marriage, and was a Poulterer. He lived at 3, Scott St, York, and his Father William used to be a Cabinet Maket. He had died by 1916.A Possible family for Alice Smith is this one from the 1881 Census:

I have a note which says that a Charles Bean was killed in the 1st world war 21 Jul 1916. He was a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps. I do not know if it is the same person. I do not know where the death of this soldier was, but it could have been Australia.
